Signs Your Transmission Needs Repair

Transmission problems generally come with telltale sights, sounds or performance problems. The life of your transmission can be prolonged with regular maintenance. Fluid should be changed regularly. Whether your car has a manual or an automatic transmission, you'll see it, hear it, or feel it when something isn't right.

Leaking Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid is pink to bright red and often smells sweet, or tart. A transmission fluid leak can indicate worn out gaskets or seals, a damaged bell housing, an out-of-balance drive shaft, a poorly aligned transmission fluid pan, worn axles, or transmission mounts that need attention. You might not always see a transmission fluid leak. It could be landing on another surface of your engine. When it burns, it gives off a distinctive odor that should be addressed immediately to prevent costly damage to your transmission.

Strange Noises Coming From Your Transmission

If your car is making a clunking noise as you shift between gears, or your manual transmission is grinding when you put it into gear, or your automatic transmission hesitates to take off from a stopped position or shimmies as your speed increases, it might be time to get it looked at. Sometimes in the beginning, it may only have problems going into reverse. Don't make the mistake of thinking it won't get worse if left unattended. The sooner you get it fixed, the cheaper the repair will be.

Driving Doesn't "Feel Right" With a Bad Transmission

The transmission warning light nags you from the dash even though you know it's not time for a fluid change. The car hesitates or grinds when going into gear and it often feels like it's slipping or slowing down as you're trying to increase your speed. These are all signs that your transmission needs repair. Sometimes the warning light will come on when the fluid is running too hot and simply needs flushed and replaced with fresh fluid.

The long-term danger of running with hot fluid is that you decrease the life of your transmission, so it's best to get it checked right away. Check out Transmission Shop, Inc located in Cottage Grove, MN for all your transmission needs!
