How to Extend the Life of Your Transmission
While every transmission system will eventually need to be replaced, most car owners would prefer that it not happen too often! If you want your car’s transmission system to serve you well for a long time, there are some simple steps you can take. Here are some ways to extend the life of your transmission system:
Don’t forget to check your transmission fluid.
It may sound obvious, but checking fluids regularly should be on every car owner’s to-do list. After all, most transmission problems originate with a fluid problem. In order to ensure that you’re on top of any issues that might arise, make sure that you’re checking your transmission fluid at least once a month.
Service your transmission system every two years.
It’s a good idea to have your transmission system checked by a professional either every two years or every 30,000 miles. When your transmission system is serviced, it means that the fluid will be changed and the filter will be replaced. This is a relatively inexpensive auto service, and can help to spare you from an expensive repair or replacement bill later.
Check your car’s cooling system frequently.
Without a cooling system to keep it from overheating, your transmission system won’t stay healthy for very long. That’s why you should also be sure to do routine preventive maintenance for your car’s cooling system, including checking the thermostat, replacing the antifreeze, and inspecting the system for leaks and other possible damage. Try to do this at least as often as you have your transmission system serviced.
